Cum usually tastes slightly salty, often a little bitter, sometimes with a sweet edge. That is the short answer. The longer one explains why, and it is far more useful.

## What does semen taste like?

Four descriptions come up most often: Salty, bitter, metallic, slightly sweet. Plenty of people add a chlorine-like note to the smell. All of these are accurate, because each one describes a different component of the same fluid.

- **Spermine and spermidine.** Polyamines are a group of organic compounds carrying two or more nitrogen groups. Spermine is a polyamine that was first identified in semen and occurs there at concentrations between 50 and 350 milligrams per decilitre.

Yes, and for a straightforward reason. The two fluids come from different sources.

Physiology still allows a few conclusions:

Pineapple is the best-known recommendation of them all. Two justifications circulate, and neither survives scrutiny.

The first says the fruit sugar in pineapple sweetens the ejaculate. That assumes dietary sugar raises the fructose concentration in seminal plasma. It does not. The fructose in semen is built from blood sugar inside the seminal vesicles, and its concentration tracks the function of those glands and hormone levels.

The second justification names bromelain. Bromelain is a mixture of protein-splitting enzymes found in pineapple. ## What alcohol, coffee and cigarettes actually change

Three things appear on every negative list: Alcohol, coffee, cigarettes. The explanations given are mostly invented, while the effects themselves are plausible, just for different reasons.

**Alcohol** dehydrates. Less fluid in the body means more concentrated secretions, and concentrated tastes stronger. The popular explanation that the body is flushing out toxins to recover describes no actual process.
