Poppers and erectile dysfunction (ED) medication such as Viagra or Cialis should never be combined; the combination can be life-threatening. Both make blood pressure fall, and together it can drop dangerously. Viagra, Cialis, Levitra and Spedra are PDE5 inhibitors (phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitors), and the warning covers the whole group.
Why Poppers and ED Medication Are a Life-Threatening Combination
Poppers and ED medication together can cause a dangerous drop in blood pressure. That is why the Viagra patient information leaflet and the European urology guidelines explicitly rule poppers out.
The Viagra patient information leaflet states: do not take Viagra if you use poppers, because the combination can lead to a dangerous fall in blood pressure.
The European urology guidelines (European Association of Urology, EAU, 2026 edition) list poppers as an absolute contraindication for PDE5 inhibitors. The result can be unpredictable falls in blood pressure with symptoms of low blood pressure.
The UK National Health Service (NHS) warns that taking sildenafil or tadalafil together with poppers can increase the risk of serious side effects.
The advice website FRANK says people taking ED medication such as Viagra should not use poppers, because poppers can make blood pressure drop.
Separately, the product information for all four PDE5 inhibitors, the official prescribing information for doctors, rules out taking them together with nitrates, which are medicines for angina.
The risks of poppers without ED medication are covered in the post on side effects of poppers.
For other combinations, see the post on mixing substances.
Which ED Medications Are Dangerous With Poppers: Viagra, Cialis, Levitra and Spedra
Poppers are dangerous with all four PDE5 inhibitors, whatever the brand name: sildenafil (Viagra), tadalafil (Cialis), vardenafil (Levitra) and avanafil (Spedra).
The half-life is the time it takes for half of the active ingredient to leave the blood.
| Active ingredient | Known as | Half-life according to the product information |
|---|---|---|
| Sildenafil | Viagra | 3 to 5 hours |
| Tadalafil | Cialis | 17.5 hours on average |
| Vardenafil | Levitra | about 4 to 5 hours |
| Avanafil | Spedra | about 6 to 17 hours |
Tadalafil stays in the body considerably longer than sildenafil and vardenafil.
Is There a Safe Gap Between Viagra or Cialis and Poppers?
None of the product information gives a safe time gap between ED medication and poppers. The half-lives in the table are not a safe gap either.
The time intervals in the prescribing information refer to nitrate medicines. For tadalafil and avanafil, they apply to doctors who have to give a nitrate in a life-threatening emergency, and even then only under close supervision.
- Sildenafil (Viagra): according to the US prescribing information, it is unknown when a nitrate can safely be given after taking sildenafil, even 24 hours later.
- Tadalafil (Cialis): in an emergency, at least 48 hours should have passed since tadalafil was last taken before giving a nitrate is considered. The basis is a study with a nitrate medicine, where the interaction lasted more than 24 hours and was no longer detectable 48 hours after tadalafil was last taken.
- Vardenafil (Levitra): according to the US prescribing information, no suitable time gap has been determined.
- Avanafil (Spedra): according to the European product information, a significant, potentially dangerous fall in blood pressure from a nitrate is more likely if avanafil was taken within the last 12 hours. The US prescribing information says at least 12 hours should pass before giving a nitrate is considered.
Warning Signs After Poppers and ED Medication: Symptoms of Low Blood Pressure
The NHS lists these symptoms that can mean your blood pressure is too low:
- lightheadedness or dizziness
- feeling sick
- blurred vision
- generally feeling weak
- confusion
- fainting
With poppers, the rapid drop in blood pressure can reduce the oxygen supply to the brain, according to the German information portal drugcom. Severe headaches up to fainting are possible.
According to the NHS, signs of a heart attack include chest pain that feels tight or like squeezing, feeling short of breath, and sweating.
Emergency After Poppers and ED Medication: What to Do Right Away
With signs of a heart attack or if someone is unconscious, call the emergency number at once: 112 in the EU, 999 in the UK, 911 in the US. The US patient information for Cialis says: if chest pain, dizziness or nausea starts during sex, stop at once and get help right away.
Further steps after poppers and ED medication:
- About to faint but still conscious: lie down on your back with your legs raised.
- Short of breath: sit upright with your upper body raised.
- Someone unconscious but breathing normally: put the person in the recovery position.
- Tell the paramedics or the doctor which ED medication was taken and when. In a heart emergency, the people treating you need to know when the medicine was last taken.
Poison control numbers for Germany and other European countries are on the poison help page.
What happens in an overdose on poppers is explained in a separate article.
Erection Problems: See a Doctor Rather Than Risk Mixing With Poppers
Erection problems that keep happening are a reason to see a general practitioner (GP) or a sexual health clinic. According to the NHS, they can be a sign of a health condition that can be treated. Examples the NHS names: high blood pressure or high cholesterol, diabetes, depression or anxiety, hormone problems.
More on the erection and on whether poppers themselves can cause erection problems is in separate articles.
The urology guidelines name a treatment without medicines: the vacuum erection device. It consists of a cylinder, a pump and a stretchy band. The band, often called a cock ring, keeps the erection. The EAU gives it a weak recommendation for well-informed patients who want non-invasive treatment without medicines. The American Urological Association (AUA) says men with ED should be told about this option.
According to the EAU patient information, the band must not stay on for more than 30 minutes. It does not recommend the device if you take blood thinners or have a bleeding disorder.
A separate article on cock rings explains what a cock ring is.
FAQ
Can you use poppers together with nitrates?
No. On its German-language information portal, Deutsche Aidshilfe advises never to use poppers together with ED medication or nitrates and warns of danger to life.
Can erection problems be a warning sign for your heart?
The European urology guidelines (EAU) say that erectile dysfunction should be considered a precursor of cardiovascular disease, and that more severe and longer-standing ED means a greater risk. The American Urological Association (AUA) calls ED a risk marker for cardiovascular disease.
What does a doctor check before prescribing ED medication?
According to the Viagra product information, a doctor takes your health history and gives you a physical examination before treatment with medicines. Doctors consider the state of your heart and circulation, because sex itself carries a degree of heart risk.
