Golden showers, wet games, watersports or simply piss play: the erotic play with urine has many names and a bad reputation it has not earned. What it has earned is honesty. ## Urophilia: the love of urine is a fetish

Urophilia is the sexual preference for urine, and drinking or swallowing urine is its variant urophagia. Both count among the paraphilias, the sexual interests beyond the standard. In the German-speaking gay and [BDSM](https://gay-blog.tomrockets.com/en/bdsm-fetish-kink/ "BDSM") scene, the same fetish runs under NS, short for Natursekt.

How common urophilia is, nobody has seriously counted. And a reliable percentage specifically for urine play does not exist in openly accessible form. What research shows instead: paraphilic interests as such are normal. In a Berlin community sample of 367 men (Ahlers and colleagues, 2011), 62.4 % reported at least one paraphilic arousal pattern. Only 1.7 % felt any distress about it. And in a non-clinical survey of over 1,000 people (Dawson and colleagues, 2016), men reported more arousal and less aversion than women for most paraphilic acts. The urine items were included. So with this fetish you are not an odd case but part of a rather large majority of men with special preferences.

## The special appeal of NS games

Three motives explain the appeal: the taboo break, the physical sensation and humiliation in the BDSM frame. Why urine turns men on has never been studied. What follows is the scene’s own reading, and we label it exactly as that.

The first motive is the taboo break. Urine is the most private thing in everyday life, and crossing exactly that line creates intimacy and kick at once. The second motive is physical: warm, wet, direct. The feeling of the fluid on the skin is its own kick that no lube replaces. ## Risks of playing with piss play

The scene’s most persistent legend says: urine is sterile. It is wrong. In an examination of 65 urine samples from healthy persons (Hilt and colleagues, 2014), 80 % of the samples grew bacteria. That only showed once the culture was run more thoroughly than in a standard lab. In total, the samples contained 35 genera and 85 species, including Lactobacillus, Corynebacterium and Streptococcus. An earlier study (Wolfe and colleagues, 2012) had already shown that the bladder hosts its own bacterial microbiome even without any infection. The honest caveat belongs here: the study examined women. The study base for men is not identical, but there is no reason to assume the male bladder is germ-free.

What does that mean in practice? On intact skin, someone else’s urine is no significant problem. It gets more critical in the mouth, on open spots and when your partner’s infection status is unclear. **[STIs](https://gay-blog.tomrockets.com/en/health-en/sexually-transmitted-infections/ "STIs").** Chlamydia and gonorrhea pathogens occur in urine. The urine test is the standard diagnostic for exactly these infections (CDC guideline 2021). Someone with an undetected urethral infection passes it on via urine. That does not mean piss play is taboo; it means a current STI test belongs to it.

**Hepatitis B.** One study examined the urine of 60 chronically infected hepatitis B patients (Jain and colleagues, 2018). It found viral DNA fragments in 45.7 % of the samples. But with healthy kidney function there was no complete viral DNA. The urine is therefore considered non-infectious. A second study (Kidd-Ljunggren and colleagues, 2006) confirms the picture. Viral DNA turned up in 2 of 25 urine samples. A real risk mainly exists with highly viremic carriers. The cleanest answer is the hepatitis vaccination anyway, which should be standard for sexually active gay men.

**HIV.** Urine does not belong to the body fluids that transmit HIV. That is the CDC’s classification. HIV transmission via urine is practically ruled out. It looks different when blood is involved, for example via wounds or a urethral injury. Then urine is no longer a harmless fluid but a mixture you do not want in your mouth.

## How to enjoy golden showers: forms of golden showers

The forms of piss play range from the gentle start to hard humiliation: pissing on him, into the mouth or drinking, wetting games and toilet roleplay. The order is up to you.

## It’s all in the taste

Urine is not water with color but a highly complex mixture: the human urine metabolome describes 2,651 confirmed metabolites (Bouatra and colleagues, 2013). Breakdown products of everything you eat, drink and take. That nutrition changes the smell and taste of urine is therefore not a scene myth but chemistry.

The most famous case is asparagus. The odor compounds have been chemically identified: S-methylthioacrylate and S-methyl-3-(methylthio)thiopropionate (White, 1975). And no, it was not methanethiol, as long claimed. The kicker: whether you can perceive the asparagus smell at all is genetically determined. In a genome-wide study with 6,909 participants (Markt and colleagues, 2016), 58.0 % of men and 61.5 % of women could not smell asparagus urine. A second study (Pelchat and colleagues, 2011) also showed that people differ in whether they produce the odor compound. So your partner may smell what you cannot perceive yourself. Or the other way round.

Beyond asparagus, the scene trades a lot of nutrition lore. Pineapple for sweeter urine, coffee and alcohol for bitter. But there are no studies on that. What is solid: hydration dilutes. Whoever drinks plenty of water produces clearer, milder-tasting urine, and whoever wants to play drinks water beforehand instead of beer.

**Summary: piss play is a normal, widespread fetish. And it is safe enough if you take two things seriously.** Current STI tests, and the truth about germs in urine.
