Feet carry us through life, and for some they are considerably more than that. The clinical term for erotic attraction to feet is podophilia. Among men who go for men, fantasies involving feet are more common than among heterosexual men and women.

Sex researcher Justin Lehmiller surveyed 4,175 people in the United States about their sexual fantasies for his 2018 book „Tell Me What You Want“. 21% of gay and bisexual men named fantasies with feet at the centre. Among heterosexual men it was 18%, among heterosexual women 5%, and 14% across all respondents. The highest figure sits with us. Lehmiller asked about fantasies, not about fetishes people act on.

## The many faces of foot fetishism

Foot [fetish](https://gay-blog.tomrockets.com/en/vore-fetish/ "fetish") is an umbrella term for very different preferences. Where someone sits usually comes down to three questions: clean or worn, active or passive, bare or covered. **Clean or worn** is the first dividing line. Some want freshly showered, well-groomed feet. Others want exactly the opposite: the smell after a long day in sneakers, damp sports socks, sweat after training. That second group tends to talk about it less openly, although it is large.

In the United States, the original federal statute of 1999 was struck down as unconstitutional by the Supreme Court in 2010 and replaced with a narrower version.

## How does a foot fetish develop?

No settled explanation exists. Three approaches come up regularly.

**Sigmund Freud** described in his 1927 essay „Fetishism“ how foot and shoe become the preferred fetish object. Wignall and Turnbull tested that inference with 793 participants and published in the journal Cognition in 2013. They did not find it confirmed: feet ranked low in erotic ratings, and no clustering with the genitals showed up. The anatomical adjacency itself is undisputed; what is contested is the conclusion drawn from it.

**Early imprinting** is the third approach. Many foot fetishists trace their preference back to childhood or adolescence, often to one specific situation. That is hard to verify, because such memories get formed in hindsight.

### Research and foot fetish

Two surveys exist on prevalence. They measure different things, and both have limits.

In a 2007 paper in the International Journal of Impotence Research, the Scorolli group at the University of Bologna analysed 381 online discussion groups [covering](https://gay-blog.tomrockets.com/en/bdsm-covern/ "covering") at least 5,000 people. Within preferences for body parts, 47% went to feet and toes, putting them clearly in front. The catch: the material came from fetish forums, meaning people who post there anyway. It says nothing about the general population.

Lehmiller’s 2018 survey of 4,175 respondents in the United States reaches beyond the fetish forums and gives the 21% for gay and bisexual men cited above.

The more interesting work for us is older. In a 1994 paper in Archives of Sexual Behavior titled „Homosexual Foot Fetishism“, Weinberg, Williams and Calhan surveyed 262 members of an organisation of gay and bisexual foot fetishists. A second analysis followed a year later in the Journal of Sex Research. These are the only traceable papers examining gay foot fetishism in its own right, and the subject has been sitting untouched for over 30 years.

One widespread claim does not survive checking. It holds that demand for footjobs rose during the AIDS crisis because they counted as a safe practice, and it appears in no contemporary source. The documented [safer sex](https://gay-blog.tomrockets.com/en/health-en/prevention-protection/ "safer sex") advice of the 1980s, such as „How to Have Sex in an Epidemic“ by Callen and Berkowitz from 1982, names [masturbation](https://gay-blog.tomrockets.com/en/is-masturbation-healthy/ "masturbation") and frottage as lower-risk alternatives. Feet do not appear there.

## Foot fetish in the gay scene

Gay foot fetishism carries codes that exist nowhere else.

The **[hanky code](https://gay-blog.tomrockets.com/en/hanky-codes/ "hanky code")**, which emerged in the American leather scene of the 1970s, assigns coral to foot fetish. Worn on the left it signals the active role, on the right the passive one. The code works more as a reference than as a practical signal today, but it still turns up at fetish parties and in profiles.

**Bootblacking** is an expression found nowhere else. [Cleaning](https://gay-blog.tomrockets.com/en/sextoy-cleaning/ "Cleaning") and polishing another man’s boots grew out of the gay leather scene of the 1950s and 1960s and remains a recognised role there, with its own competitions. Reliable market figures do not exist. Selling between adults is legally unproblematic in Germany, though regular income with intent to profit requires registering a trade, a Gewerbe.

## Cultural signs of foot fetishism

Erotic attention to feet is old and well documented, although for the gay scene the trail only picks up in the 20th century.

The man who talks about it openly today is Ricky Martin, who addressed it in several interviews in 2024 without making much of it. From the German-speaking world, comedian Bülent Ceylan said the same that year. Two other frequently cited names sit differently. Quentin Tarantino has the preference attributed to him because of the foot scenes in his [films](https://gay-blog.tomrockets.com/en/gay-films/ "films"), and has explicitly denied it. With Orlando Bloom the claim comes from his then wife, with no statement from him.

Far more solid than such attributions is the scene’s own history. Bootblacking and the hanky code are documented practice in the gay leather scene from the 1950s and 1970s respectively, with their own roles, their own competitions and their own system of signals. That gives gay foot fetishism an older and better recorded tradition than most fetishes discussed today.

Outside the scene the trail runs back further. In China, the bound foot, known as the lotus foot, counted as an ideal of beauty from the 10th century onwards. The practice spread mainly through the urban upper class, where the bound foot counted as a marriage criterion. It was banned in 1911, ended in practice during the 1930s, and the last factory making the matching shoes closed in 1999.

From Bavaria comes a particularly well documented single case. ## Things to try out
