Dirty talk is the simplest sex technique in the world: no toy, no money, no training, just your mouth and a bit of courage. Still, many men do not dare to speak during sex. This guide changes exactly that. You get concrete sentences for every level from soft to hard, and you learn what research actually knows about erotic talk. We draw on a meta-analysis of 48 studies, the first systematic examination of erotic talk, and 34 hours of real sex audio recordings. Sounds dry, but it is the best proof there is: talking during sex is not a side issue.

## Dirty Talk: What is it actually, and how does it work properly?

Dirty talk is everything you say during sex to raise arousal. Compliments, wishes, instructions, fantasies. Or simply the announcement of how turned on something makes you. The range runs from a whispered „you smell so good“ to the explicit statement of what you are about to do to him.

Research has built a real map of this by now. Jonason and colleagues (2016) were the first to examine erotic talk systematically: 95 participants provided 569 real statements, which sorted into eight themes. A second study with 238 people described the statements along two basic directions. Individualist talk means self-focused statements about your own arousal. Mutualistic talk means partner-focused statements about him and the two of you. The majority of people use dirty talk, and there are hardly any differences between the sexes.

And it pays off measurably. The meta-analysis by Mallory and colleagues (2019) combined 48 studies on sexual communication. The result: the more couples talk about sex, the better their sexual function. The correlations are r = .23 for orgasm and r = .35 for overall sexual function. The link was markedly stronger among married couples at r = .47 than among dating couples at r = .11. These findings are correlations, not guarantees, but the direction is stable across 48 studies.

One honest note upfront: there are no direct studies on dirty talk among gay men. What exists are studies including male couples and studies on sexual communication in general, and they say something surprisingly clear.

## Slowly approach, tell him what you are feeling

The most common dirty talk mistake is jumping from zero to porn dialogue. If you have been silent during sex so far, a sudden verbal offensive reads as funny rather than hot. The right entry point is an observation: „That feels so good.“ Or feedback: „Right there, do not stop.“

The small entry point is not esotericism, it is the result of couples research. Merwin and colleagues (2022) studied 229 couples, among them 69 couples with two men or two women. They additionally followed 217 couples in a 35-day diary. Retrospectively, women did report more partner-focused talk, but in the diary, meaning the real everyday measurement, that difference disappeared. Between the couple types there were no differences there. The male couples in this study talked during sex just as much as every other couple type. And Chen and colleagues (2025) surveyed 103 male couples over 15 days. Both the presence and the quality of sexual communication were linked to one’s own satisfaction, intimacy and daily mood. And one partner’s communication additionally showed up in the other partner’s emotional intimacy.

So the practical starting point for your first dirty talk round is small. Say what you feel while you feel it. Séguin (2022) showed in 27 interviews why starting is hard. Many stay silent because they do not want to break the mood or make themselves open to judgment. The same study delivers the good news: communication during sex is a skill that develops over time. Nobody starts as a pro.

## Sexy compliments take away his and your inhibitions

A dirty compliment is the safest entry into dirty talk because it does two things at once: it makes you braver and him more confident. „Your ass turns me on so much“ is feedback and foreplay in a single sentence.

The data on this comes from Denes and colleagues (2020), who surveyed 319 young adults right after sex. The result of the Denes study is precise and slightly surprising. Positive relational messages during sex, sentences like „I love how you move“, were linked to a higher likelihood of orgasm and more relationship satisfaction. Pure erotic talk without relational content, on the other hand, did not predict orgasm. The lesson: compliments with substance beat empty porn lines.

For gay men, a specific brake comes on top. Jaspal and colleagues (2025) studied 199 gay men in the UK and Germany. Internalized homonegativity, meaning internalized shame about your own identity, was directly linked to lower sexual satisfaction. On top of that, the shame worked through a detour: less sexual communication. Translated to the bedroom: shame and silence go together, and silence goes with less satisfaction. Our reading of this: compliments are the obvious antidote, because they dismantle shame, in him and in you.

A few levels to place yourself. Soft: „You smell so good“ or „I love your taste“. Medium: „You turn me on so much when you do that.“ Explicit: „Your cock feels too good to stay quiet.“

## Express wishes, for even hotter sex

The strongest form of dirty talk is the announcement: you tell him what you want, before or while it happens. „Fuck me now“ is dirty talk and a statement of need in one, and that is exactly what makes it so effective.

MacNeil and Byers (2009) studied 104 couples and made the mechanism behind it visible: people who disclose their sexual preferences to their partner are better understood, and that understanding leads to more sexual satisfaction. The researchers call this the instrumental pathway. Dirty talk is the instrumental pathway in real time. Instead of reviewing afterwards what was good, you steer in the moment what happens next.

This works in both directions. You can voice wishes: „I want you to take me harder.“ You can give instructions: „Turn around.“ And you can announce what you are about to do. Announcements like that trigger anticipation in him: „In a minute you will hear me come.“

By the way, moaning belongs to the same toolbox. Anikin (2024) analyzed 34 hours of audio from 2,239 real sexual episodes, including 289 male voices. The result: men are not less loud during sex than women, but spoken language is rare. Sounds are the norm, words the deliberate addition. That is exactly where their power lies: when you speak, you give more than the reflex.

## Feelings are allowed during sex, even declarations of love add sensuality

Dirty talk does not have to be dirty. Mutualistic talk, the partner-focused direction from the Jonason study, explicitly includes tenderness. Think „I love you“ or „I do not want to be anywhere else.“ Said in bed, such sentences often hit harder than any obscenity. Inside the protected space of sex they show a vulnerability that everyday life rarely allows.

And the effect outlasts the sex. The pillow talk research by Denes (2012) shows: positive disclosures after sex are linked to more trust, more closeness and more relationship satisfaction. Couples in committed relationships benefited more than casual connections. Here too the sober reading applies: the pillow talk studies are correlational. But they point in one clear direction, and they cost you nothing but courage.

So when you notice you want to say something warm in the middle of sex: say it. That is not a mood killer, it is for many men the moment they remember.

## Dirty talk by message: sexting as foreplay

Dirty talk does not end at the edge of the bed. Sexting is the same art with a keyboard, and it has long been normal. In the meta-analysis by Mori and colleagues (2020), covering 50 studies and 18,122 young adults, 38.3 % had sent an erotic message at least once. Baker (2022) found among 465 adults that more frequent sexting was linked to higher sexual satisfaction, higher relationship satisfaction and better sexual communication.

Sexting is the perfect training ground for dirty talk. You have time to phrase things, nobody is watching your face, and you can test sentences before saying them out loud. One golden rule comes with it, straight from the same Mori meta-analysis: 15.0 % of respondents had forwarded someone else’s intimate content without that person’s consent. So two things: send explicit content only to people you trust, and never forward what someone entrusted to you. Do not be part of those 15.0 %.

## Summary: Dirty talk is an asset to gay sex, turn thoughts into words

Dirty talk is not an inborn talent but a skill with a clear learning path: start small with observations, escalate via compliments to announcements, and allow feelings too. Research gives you tailwind: couples who talk about sex report the better sexual function, and male couples are no exception.

## FAQ

### What should I say during dirty talk?

Start with what is happening right now: „That feels so good“ or „Do not stop.“ Then escalate via compliments to wishes and announcements. From „Your ass turns me on so much“ through „Fuck me now“ all the way to announcing your own orgasm. The research by Jonason and colleagues (2016) shows that dirty talk sentences can be described along two directions: about your own arousal or about him and the two of you. Both work.

### Is dirty talk different for gay men?

No, says the closest available evidence. In the diary study by Merwin and colleagues (2022) with 217 couples, there were no differences between gay, lesbian and heterosexual couples in talking during sex. And in the study by Chen and colleagues (2025) with 103 male couples, sexual communication was linked to more satisfaction and closeness, exactly as in every other sample.

### How do I start dirty talk when I am shy?

Begin outside the bedroom with a message, because sexting gives you time to phrase things. During sex itself, start with a single observation („This is so hot“) instead of sentences you memorized. The interview study by Séguin (2022) shows: talking during sex is a skill that develops with practice. Being shy at the start is the norm, not the problem.

### Does moaning count as dirty talk?

Moaning is the base level, words are the addition. Anikin (2024) found in 2,239 real sex recordings that men are no less loud than women, but spoken language rarely occurs. Whoever adds speech rises above the reflex, and that is exactly what makes dirty talk so effective for the partner.

### Is sexting a form of dirty talk?

Yes, sexting is dirty talk in written form, with the same levels from compliment to announcement. In the meta-analysis by Mori and colleagues (2020), 38.3 % of young adults had sent erotic messages. The flip side matters: 15.0 % of respondents had forwarded someone else’s intimate content without consent. Send explicit content only to people you trust, and respect what is entrusted to you.

### Can dirty talk improve my relationship?

The data says: probably yes. The meta-analysis by Mallory and colleagues (2019) found stable links between sexual communication and sexual function across 48 studies. These are correlations, not guarantees, but the effort is minimal: one honest sentence during sex costs nothing and can change a lot.
