A dildo alternative is something you grab on the spot to use in your butt instead of a dildo. Whether you call it a dildo substitute or wonder what to use instead of a dildo, the rules stay the same. The safest alternative is your own fingers. Any object has to pass four conditions: a flared base or a retrieval option, unbreakable and smooth, non-porous, and clean under a [condom](https://gay-blog.tomrockets.com/en/jerking-with-a-condom/ "condom"). Plenty of household classics fail that check.

## The Safest Dildo Alternative: Your Fingers

The safest dildo alternative is your own fingers. They cannot disappear inside you, and you feel right away what works.

The Austrian gay health site aboutgay.at is clear: [fingering](https://gay-blog.tomrockets.com/en/fingering-among-gays/ "fingering") carries no risk as long as no wounds occur. Keep your nails short and smooth and use plenty of [lube](https://gay-blog.tomrockets.com/en/a-little-lube-sex-toy-material-guide/ "lube"), see our [anal lube](https://gay-blog.tomrockets.com/en/anal-lube/) guide. For technique, see our [anal fingering](https://gay-blog.tomrockets.com/en/anal-fingering-7-tips/) tips.

## Safety First: How to Tell a Usable Dildo Substitute

A dildo substitute from your kitchen or bathroom has to pass four checks. If one fails, the object stays out.

1. **A flared base or a way to get it back out.** Planned Parenthood recommends a flared base, wider at the bottom, or another way to pull the object out. Without one, it can slip all the way in and need medical removal. Sexual Health Bromley is a clinic service of the British National Health Service (NHS). It says [anal toys](https://gay-blog.tomrockets.com/en/buying-anal-toys/ "anal toys") always need a cord or an end that cannot pass inside. The Austrian portal MeinMed.at adds that smaller objects definitely need a retrieval option, such as a string.

1. **Unbreakable, smooth, no sharp or loose parts.** Planned Parenthood also warns that improvised objects may be unsafe, especially if they can break or have rough, sharp, or loose parts. Anything that can snap, splinter, or shed a piece stays out.

1. **Non-porous material.** The US health organization lists materials that take on no germs and are easy to clean. On that list: 100 percent silicone, hard plastic, stainless steel, aluminum, and break-resistant glass. Porous materials such as silicone blends, jelly, PVC, vinyl, TPE, and TPR can hold germs even after washing. A kitchen hygiene analogy makes the point. Ak, Cliver, and Kaspar (1994, Journal of Food Protection) found knife-scarred plastic boards hard to clean by hand. The German Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR) recommends replacing grooved cutting boards. That is a food safety analogy, but the logic transfers.

1. **Clean, and under a condom.** aboutgay.at recommends a new condom over the toy for each insertion, plus proper [cleaning](https://gay-blog.tomrockets.com/en/sextoy-cleaning/ "cleaning") before sharing.

Size matters too. The objects in a Russian case series (Subbotin et al. 2000, 26 patients over 22 years) were typically large. A typical object measured over 6 cm (about 2.4 in) in diameter and over 15 cm (about 5.9 in) in length. Whatever you use, start small. If you would rather build something with a proper base, see our guide on [making your own dildo](https://gay-blog.tomrockets.com/en/make-own-dildo/).

## Household Dildo Alternatives: What Works and What Doesn’t

Safe household alternatives to a dildo are rare. Of the four checks from the safety section, most kitchen and bathroom objects fail number one: the missing base. No study has ever counted how many people use household objects as a dildo replacement. Case series only show what ends up in hospitals.

### Cucumbers, Carrots and Eggplants: Fruit and Vegetables

**Verdict: not in your butt.** Vegetables have no base, so they can slip all the way inside. Cucumbers and carrots were among the most common objects in a Russian series (Subbotin et al. 2000). Cucumbers also appear in the series of 14 cases from Mashhad, Iran (Maddah et al. 2023, 2001 to 2020). Case reports document a carrot stuck in the rectum in Korea (Lim et al. 2015) and a whole eggplant in Italy (Bosi and De’Angelis 2020). The BfR warns, as a food safety statement, that cucumbers and carrots can carry pathogens which washing does not reliably remove. MeinMed.at lists fruit as unfit for the anus, and a condom over a cucumber creates no base.

### Bottles, Glasses and Deodorant Cans

**Verdict: never.** In a systematic review of 54 studies (Ploner et al. 2020), only [sex toys](https://gay-blog.tomrockets.com/en/sextoys-for-gay-sex/ "sex toys") ranked ahead of glass objects among self-inserted rectal foreign bodies. Deodorant cans, bottles, and a tea glass appear in the series of 15 men from Izmir, Turkey (Coskun et al. 2013). MeinMed.at warns that the caps of spray cans carry a high injury risk.

### Toothbrushes, Hairbrushes and Pens

**Verdict: keep it out of your butt.** A toothbrush breached the bowel wall of a 72-year-old man in Malaysia by 1 cm (0.4 in) (Aimanan et al. 2022). He needed abdominal surgery and a relieving colostomy. Rashid et al. 2013 documented a bowel perforation from a lost toothbrush. A brush and a ballpoint pen also appear in the Izmir series (Coskun et al. 2013). The electric toothbrush gets floated as a vibrator, but no research backs that: outside the body only, never inside.

### Silicone Kitchen Tools

**Verdict: only with restrictions.** Food grade silicone is tested for food and mouth contact, not for your butt. The BfR recommendation XV covers food contact and items for the oral mucosa, like pacifiers and teething rings, not genital or anal mucosa. In 2025 the Bavarian food safety authority LGL tested 60 silicone baking tools. 54 of them were unremarkable; 3 released 0.7 to 1.6 percent volatile compounds, above the 0.5 percent limit. Food grade does not mean tested for insertion. A silicone tool used as a dildo alternative still has to pass the Planned Parenthood criteria: 100 percent silicone, smooth, unbreakable, with a base.

### Wood: Spoons, Handles, Sticks

**Verdict: hands off.** Unsealed wood is porous and can splinter, exactly what Planned Parenthood warns about. Wooden phallus replicas appear in the Russian series (Subbotin et al. 2000), wooden pieces in the Mashhad cases (Maddah et al. 2023). The kitchen hygiene analogy from the material check above applies here too: scarred wood is hard to clean by hand. Porosity plus breakage risk makes wood a clear no.

Store-bought toys have their own material pitfalls; our article on [dangerous sex toys](https://gay-blog.tomrockets.com/en/dangerous-sextoys/) explains which materials to avoid.

## When a Dildo Alternative Gets Stuck: Go to the ER

A dildo alternative that slides all the way in and stays put is a case for the emergency room. Don’t dig for it yourself; go promptly. In the published case series, most objects were removed without abdominal surgery.

Ploner et al., 2020, a systematic review with meta-analysis in Acta Gastroenterologica Belgica, analyzed 54 studies of rectal foreign bodies. The motive was mostly sexual stimulation. Those affected were mostly young and male, men outnumbered women 6 to 1. Among self-inserted objects, sex toys led at 35.7 percent, glass objects followed at 17.5 percent. Removal under general anesthesia was necessary in 45.2 percent of cases, and the total complication rate was 30.4 percent.

In the Izmir series (Coskun et al. 2013, World Journal of Emergency Surgery), 15 men were treated from 1999 to 2009. Twelve objects were removed through the anus under anesthesia. Three men needed abdominal surgery. One patient had a bowel perforation, four had tears in the mucosa. Nobody died. In the Mashhad series (Maddah et al. 2023, Clinical Case Reports), only one case needed abdominal surgery.

Case series show what turns up in clinics, not how often something goes wrong at home. Most cases end well. Not all of them do.

## Don’t Forget Hygiene: How to Clean a Dildo Alternative

A clean dildo alternative needs four steps: a condom over the object, soap and hot water after use, a thorough rinse, and no sharing. Each step has a reason.

The Burnett Foundation Aotearoa from New Zealand recommends washing toys with soap and hot water and rinsing them thoroughly. Soap left on the surface reacts badly with the lining of your butt.

aboutgay.at (Stop Aids, Graz) recommends not passing a toy from one person to the next before it is properly cleaned. The site also suggests pulling a new condom over the toy with each insertion.

The material check above applies to cleaning as well. Planned Parenthood warns that porous materials such as silicone blends, jelly, PVC, vinyl, TPE, and TPR absorb germs even when you wash them. A condom helps. The blunt consequence for porous dildo substitutes: they fail check number three and stay out of your butt.

SH:24, an NHS-commissioned UK service, adds that battery-operated toys should not be submerged [in water](https://gay-blog.tomrockets.com/en/sex-in-water/ "in water"). The Swiss AIDS service Aids-Hilfe St. Gallen-Appenzell goes further: disinfect toys after use, not just wash them.

Everything about materials and care is in our guide to [cleaning sex toys](https://gay-blog.tomrockets.com/en/sextoy-cleaning/).

### Sharing Only With a Fresh Condom

The safest way to share a dildo alternative is not to share it at all. If it happens anyway, use a fresh condom.

The Burnett Foundation spells out the rule: put a condom over the toy. Change the condom as soon as the toy changes hands or holes. SH:24 recommends one set of toys per person if you play with several partners. Deutsche Aidshilfe’s ICH WEISS WAS ICH TU campaign says the same about [dildos](https://gay-blog.tomrockets.com/en/dildo-gay/ "dildos"): don’t share them.

Ending HIV (ACON, Australia) is candid: there are no large studies on the transmission of [sexually transmitted infections](https://gay-blog.tomrockets.com/en/health-en/sexually-transmitted-infections/ "sexually transmitted infections") (STI) through sex toys. In theory, a risk exists as soon as body fluids like [semen](https://gay-blog.tomrockets.com/en/produce-semen/ "semen") or blood traces get passed along.

Champenois et al., 2013 (Sexually Transmitted Infections) compared 53 syphilis cases with 90 controls, all men who have sex with men, in Lille, France. Anal toy use with casual partners went along with higher odds of syphilis, odds ratio 2.72, 95 percent confidence interval 1.01 to 7.32. That is an association, not a cause. The study does not say whether the toys were shared or just unwashed.

## Advantages and Disadvantages of a Dildo Replacement

A dildo replacement is right there when the mood hits and costs nothing. What it almost always lacks is a base against getting lost, a material tested for the body, and a surface you can properly clean.

Advantages:

- Available: the object is already in your home.
- Free: it costs nothing.
- Discreet: nobody who sees it lying around asks a second question.

Disadvantages:

- Almost never a base. Planned Parenthood wants a flared base or another retrieval option on everything that goes into your butt. Without one, the object can slip fully inside and may need a doctor.
- Untested material. Food-contact silicone is tested for food and the mouth, like pacifiers and teethers, not for anal mucosa. Food-safe does not mean tested for your butt.
- Barely cleanable surfaces. Porous materials absorb germs even when washed, per the US health organization. Scratched surfaces stay hard to clean by hand, as the kitchen hygiene analogy above shows. Porous objects stay out.
- Breakage and injury. The Austrian portal MeinMed.at recommends only toys made for this purpose. Things that can break or have rough, sharp, or loose parts may not be safe, per the US health organization.

### When a Real Dildo Is Worth It

A real dildo is worth it as soon as anal play stops being a one-off. In an online survey in the United States, Rosenberger et al., 2012 (Archives of Sexual Behavior), asked 25,294 gay and bisexual men about sex toys. The sample came from a dating platform and is not representative. Of them, 62.1 percent had used dildos. Among the men who had used sex toys, 95.7 percent inserted toys like dildos or [butt plugs](https://gay-blog.tomrockets.com/en/use-butt-plug/ "butt plugs") in their own butt during [masturbation](https://gay-blog.tomrockets.com/en/masturbation-benefits/ "masturbation"). The survey never asked about improvised objects. No numbers exist.

Planned Parenthood keeps the recommendation plain: toys made as sex toys are the best choice, above all for insertion. If you keep reaching for substitutes, a beginner dildo with a suction cup or flared base solves the disadvantages listed above in one move. Our guide on [gay dildos explained](https://gay-blog.tomrockets.com/en/dildo-gay/) covers what to look for, and the [dildos in the TomRockets shop](https://tomrockets.com/en/gay-online-shop/sex-toys/dildos) show the selection.

## FAQ

### What can I use as a dildo alternative?

According to aboutgay.at, fingers are the low-risk option as long as no wounds develop. Beyond that, Planned Parenthood’s rule applies: anything going into your butt needs a flared base or another way to pull it back out. Emergency case series show what people actually grabbed, from bottles and brushes to eggplants and cucumbers. Most of those objects failed the base rule.

### What is a safe dildo alternative for anal?

A safe dildo alternative has a flared base or a string that keeps it from slipping in, as Sexual Health Bromley and Planned Parenthood recommend. The object should be smooth, unbreakable, and made of a non-porous material such as pure silicone, hard plastic, or stainless steel. Those materials wash clean with soap and water. A condom on top adds a clean layer.

### Are vegetables safe to use as a dildo?

No. MeinMed.at, an Austrian health portal, advises against inserting fruit and other unsuitable objects. Vegetables have no base, so they can slip fully inside, as case reports of a carrot and an eggplant in the rectum confirm. The German Federal Institute for Risk Assessment also states that raw produce can carry pathogens and that washing does not reliably remove them. That statement is about food, not mucous membranes.

### Can you use a toothbrush as a dildo?

Not for insertion. A case report from Malaysia describes a toothbrush in the rectum of a 72-year-old man. It breached the bowel wall into the abdomen by one centimeter, he needed abdominal surgery and a relieving colostomy. Another report documents a bowel perforation from a lost toothbrush. An electric toothbrush may vibrate against the outside; there is no research on that, and inside it never belongs.

### Why does a dildo alternative need a flared base?

Because without a flared base or another way to retrieve it, the object can slip completely inside and get stuck. It must then be removed by a doctor, as Planned Parenthood warns. In the 54 studies analyzed by Ploner et al., removal required general anesthesia in 45.2 percent of cases. A base wider than the shaft keeps the object reachable and keeps you in control.

### What should I do if something gets stuck in my butt?

Don’t dig around in there yourself. Go to the emergency room promptly. In the series from Izmir, 12 of 15 men had the object removed without abdominal surgery, and nobody died. Most cases end well, but only a doctor can tell which kind of case yours is.
