[Dating apps](https://gay-blog.tomrockets.com/en/gay-dating-apps/ "Dating apps") come down to three things: an honest profile, a first message about the other man’s profile and open intentions. A 2022 Pew Research Center survey of 6,034 US adults asked about dating sites and apps. It found that 51 per cent of lesbian, gay or bisexual (LGB) adults had ever used one, against 28 per cent of straight adults. Of LGB users of dating sites or apps, 34 per cent had ever tried Grindr. For fake profiles, dating traps and blackmail with intimate images, police and app operators give clear rules.

## Choosing a dating app for what you want

Which dating app fits depends on what you want: dates, hookups or one specific [kink](https://gay-blog.tomrockets.com/en/bdsm-fetish-kink/fetishes-kinks/ "kink").

Grindr, Romeo and Scruff are examples of dating apps. Romeo started as GayRomeo, was called PlanetRomeo and is ROMEO today. There is a separate [kink dating guide](https://gay-blog.tomrockets.com/en/kink-dating-2/) for men looking specifically for kink partners.

## Your dating app profile

Your dating app profile should be honest and current. Old photos, photos of someone else and false details show at the latest when you meet.

For the photos, these points matter:

- at least one photo with your face clearly visible
- one full-body shot
- natural light
- a calm background
- a hint at the erotic rather than an overload

As a rule of thumb, the bio takes three to five sentences: who you are, what you are looking for, and what matters to you. One concrete detail, such as a dry sense of humour or a proper hobby, gives other men something to reply to.

## How to write a first message on a dating app, and common chat mistakes

A first message on a dating app works when it refers to something in his profile. That can be a photo or a line in the bio. It shows him that you read past the first picture.

A bare „hi“ or „hey“ gets lost, because it gives him nothing to answer. One question is enough for a start: „Where was the third photo taken? The water looks warmer than the North Sea.“

Chat [mistakes](https://gay-blog.tomrockets.com/en/common-fisting-mistakes/ "mistakes") include:

- too many messages too fast, or far [too much](https://gay-blog.tomrockets.com/en/too-little-sex-too-much-sex/ "too much") too soon
- one-word replies without visible interest
- only reporting your own day
- spelling that is barely readable

Set yourself a time limit for how long you wait for a reply before you delete the contact.

## Intentions, boundaries and consent

On dating apps, say openly what you are looking for and name your [boundaries](https://gay-blog.tomrockets.com/en/bdsm-limit-boundaries/ "boundaries").

That can be a relationship, sex, or both. Vagueness frustrates both [sides](https://gay-blog.tomrockets.com/en/the-hottest-sex-of-my-life-without-anal/ "sides").

Name your boundaries and preferences calmly. A no needs no discussion, and a named preference saves both of you the guessing.

Deal breakers are worth deciding in advance: disrespect, racist remarks, drug use. When a man crosses one, report the behaviour to the platform. On racist remarks, the blog has a separate guide: [what’s behind sexual racism](https://gay-blog.tomrockets.com/en/sexual-racism-whats-behind-it/). The [wheel of consent](https://gay-blog.tomrockets.com/en/wheel-of-consent-sex/) is a model for wishes and boundaries in bed.

Protection during sex is the subject of the guide to [pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP)](https://gay-blog.tomrockets.com/en/hiv-prep/).

### Send nudes only when asked

Send nudes only when the man you are writing to explicitly asks for them. The same 2022 Pew Research Center survey also asked about unwanted sexual messages or images. Among lesbian, gay or bisexual (LGB) users, 56 per cent said they had ever received them. Among straight users, the figure was 34 per cent. Both figures come from users of dating sites or apps in this US survey. In England and Wales, section 66A of the Sexual Offences Act 2003 makes sending a photograph or film of genitals an offence. The offence applies if the sender intends alarm, distress or humiliation. It also covers sending for sexual gratification while reckless as to whether the recipient is caused alarm, distress or humiliation. The section was inserted by the Online Safety Act 2023 and has been in force since 31 January 2024.

Texas is one US state with such a law. Since 1 September 2019, the electronic sending of sexually explicit images that were not requested or consented to has been a Class C misdemeanour there. When a man explicitly asks for pictures, that is the topic of [sexting and dick pics](https://gay-blog.tomrockets.com/en/sexting-and-dickpic/).

## Spotting fake profiles, dating traps and sextortion on dating apps

Dating apps carry a few serious risks alongside the fun: fake profiles, dating traps and sextortion, blackmail with intimate images.

### Warning signs

Catfishing means someone presents a fake identity online. Grindr’s help pages advise suspicion in general if someone on a dating app pressures you to meet in private quickly. The pages also advise suspicion if someone changes the meeting place at the last minute to somewhere you do not know. Only for lower-risk areas, Grindr adds two more warning signs: someone who refuses to send photos of their face, and someone who will not video chat before meeting.

### Dating traps

A dating trap is a meeting arranged through a dating app at which offenders rob or attack the person they met. In April 2025, London’s Metropolitan Police (the Met) appealed for victims to come forward. The Met believed about 50 offences of burglary, theft and fraud had taken place across London between October 2024 and March 2025. The victims were identified by the criminals via Grindr, and the Met treated the offences as potential hate crimes.

In December 2025, the Met reported that two men had been jailed for five and three and a half years. Their organised group carried out 35 burglaries and 20 related frauds against 22 victims. The two men initiated contact via Grindr and arranged to meet in the victim’s home. There they used distraction tactics to obtain the phone passwords and stole the handsets. They then accessed personal data to make payments, withdraw money or transfer funds.

The US Department of Justice reported a Dallas case in December 2019. Defendants admitted using Grindr to lure gay men to an empty apartment for robbery, carjacking, kidnapping and hate crimes.

### Sextortion: what to do

Sextortion, financially motivated sexual extortion, is online blackmail: someone threatens to release sexual images of you unless you pay. The UK’s National Crime Agency describes offenders as usually organised and often based abroad, with male adults aged 18 to 30 particularly at risk. According to Grindr, some scammers record intimate conversations or videos and threaten to share them unless demands are met.

In the United States, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) reported figures through its Portland office in 2021. Its Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) received more than 16,000 sextortion complaints in the first seven months of that year. Losses topped 8 million US dollars. Most adult victims reported that the initial contact was mutual and happened on dating websites or apps.

If it happens to you, the National Crime Agency advises the following steps for adults in the UK:

- Stop all communication with the offender immediately and block them on every platform
- Do not pay, as there is no guarantee that payment stops the threats, and pay nothing more if you already have
- Keep anything that could serve as evidence, such as messages, images and bank details
- Deactivate social media accounts rather than delete them, so that data can still be retrieved
- Collect links to any images shared online if you can, because you may need to share them with the police or reporting services. Do not share them with anyone else
- Report the incident to your local police force by calling 101, or 999 if you are in immediate danger
- Report it to the platform where the contact happened
- Use StopNCII, a free tool that helps detect and remove images

## Meeting a date safely

Dating apps get you the match; the first meeting is yours to plan: the place, your travel and who knows where you are. Police Scotland gives this general advice for online dating:

- use trusted sites and apps
- avoid sharing personal information
- meet in a public place, go during the day, and bring a friend
- be aware that many online dating profiles are fake

On its help pages, Grindr recommends an in-app video chat before meeting in person whenever possible. Grindr advises leaving valuables at home, not accepting drinks or [drugs](https://gay-blog.tomrockets.com/en/fisting-drugs/ "drugs") from strangers, and keeping an eye on your drink. Grindr also advises staying in control of your own transport and having a plan to get home. For lower-risk areas, Grindr also suggests sending a friend a screenshot of the profile you are meeting and agreeing check-in times with each other. Grindr also suggests checking the person with a reverse image search on Google or social media.

Romeo advises trusting your gut: if a date does not feel right, do not meet. The operator recommends a video call first if you have any doubts, however small. Romeo also recommends keeping your phone charged and sharing your live location with a friend. Romeo points out that drugs and alcohol can affect your decisions.

Grindr also offers safety features in its Security and Privacy settings. A discreet app icon hides the Grindr logo. A PIN lock helps protect your account even if someone gains access to your phone. A biometric login is also available. You can choose not to show your distance, but the grid, the app’s profile overview, still orders profiles by proximity, so a rough distance can be inferred. In regions of the world where LGBTQ people face greater risks, „show distance“ is off by default.

For [BDSM](https://gay-blog.tomrockets.com/en/bdsm-fetish-kink/ "BDSM") and kink dates there is [covering](https://gay-blog.tomrockets.com/en/bdsm-covern/): a trusted, informed person knows about your date.

### Spiking

The Home Office guidance on GOV.UK from December 2023 lists these signs of spiking in yourself or someone you are with:

- confusion and disorientation
- nausea and [vomiting](https://gay-blog.tomrockets.com/en/blowjob-vomiting/ "vomiting")
- hallucinations and paranoia
- poor co-ordination and vision
- an inability to communicate clearly
- memory loss and blackouts

The guidance also states that spiking is a crime. If you feel unwell, get medical help as soon as possible by calling the UK numbers 999 or 111.

GOV.UK also advises reporting the spiking to the police as soon as possible, on the UK numbers 999 or 101. According to GOV.UK, some drugs leave the body in less than 12 hours.

The guide on [recognising a GHB or GBL emergency](https://gay-blog.tomrockets.com/en/emergencies-with-ghb-gbl/) explains what to do.

## When a chat goes nowhere

Some chats on dating apps end for reasons that have nothing to do with you. He only wanted a one-off, he is taken, or the chemistry is simply not there. Rejection is not a verdict on your worth. [Ghosting](https://gay-blog.tomrockets.com/en/what-exactly-is-ghosting/), when someone stops replying without a word, says more about the other person than about you.

Profile photos can be edited. Being put down over your body is called [bodyshaming](https://gay-blog.tomrockets.com/en/what-is-bodyshaming/).

After ghosting or a rejection, sort out your feelings instead of pushing them aside. Talk to friends or a therapist if the rejection is painful. Do not spend even more time on the apps to distract yourself.

## Dating apps, loneliness and problematic use

Two studies from 2020, Zervoulis in the UK and Breslow, link dating app use with loneliness or a poorer body image. They show associations, not causes. Zervoulis surveyed 191 men who have sex with men. Heavy users of dating apps reported a lower sense of community, more loneliness and lower satisfaction with life. The authors see some evidence that men using the apps mainly for sexual encounters reported higher self-esteem and life satisfaction. The comparison is with men using the apps mainly for other reasons.

Breslow studied a national sample of 230 sexual minority men, meaning gay, bisexual and other non-heterosexual men. The number of apps used, though not how often, was linked to more [objectification](https://gay-blog.tomrockets.com/en/objectification/ "objectification") and more body surveillance, monitoring one’s own body. That number was also linked to lower body satisfaction and self-esteem.

## FAQ

### Can you unsend a message on Grindr?

Only with Grindr Unlimited, according to Grindr’s help pages. Deleting a message removes it from your own chat history only, not from the other person’s. Removing a sent message is currently only available to Grindr Unlimited subscribers.

### How precise is your location on Romeo?

Romeo shows your position to an accuracy of 50 metres. The operator points out that no app sorting users by distance can reliably prevent someone from calculating and publishing your exact location. For more protection, Romeo recommends choosing a fixed location within a radius of 100 km.

### Is dating app addiction a recognised diagnosis?

No. The World Health Organization’s ICD-11, release 2024-01, names only gambling disorder and gaming disorder as disorders due to addictive behaviours, and there is no diagnosis of its own for dating apps. Problematic use of dating apps can still exist.
